Global mobile phone use to pass record 3 billion

Thursday, June 28th, 2007

By the end of July, global mobile phone use will for the first time pass the 3 billion mark–equivalent to half the world’s population–as cell phone demand booms in China, India and Africa, a survey said on Wednesday. From African farmers to Chinese factory workers, mobile operators will have notched up more than 3.25 billion mobile phone subscriptions worldwide by the end of the year. Along with the Internet, the mobile phone has revolutionized communication. The mobile phone has spread from city whiz kids to Brazilian slum dwellers. More than 1,000 new customers are effectively signing up for mobile phones every minute around the world, the survey showed. Analysts have forecast that 65% of all handsets made this year will be sold in emerging markets as manufacturers, such as Nokia of Finland and Motorola of the United States, push out low-cost phones and mobile phone operators cut call charges. The figures cited in the survey take account of multiple mobile subscriptions by customers. Penetration in Europe has topped 100% of the population, with 666 million mobile connections. A record 240 million handsets were sold and 135 million new customers signed up to mobile phone networks in the quarter to the end of March, the report said. In terms of connections, the last quarter was the third strongest in the industry’s history after the fourth quarters of 2004 and 2006, when 142 million and 163 million, respectively, signed up.

Rock On: 12 of the Best Music Social Networks

Sunday, June 24th, 2007

Mashable: June 22, 2007 — 04:40 AM PDT — by Livia Iacolare

Internet radio may be facing uncertain times, but many musical social networks continue to thrive. If you’re in a band, these sites are essential for promoting your music: take note, and sign up for as many as possible to maximize your reach. For fans, meanwhile, we’ve included some great places to just listen to music. We won’t mention the obvious one, of course: MySpace remains the hub for music on the web.

Flotones

Flotones is a monetized social network for artists and their fans. The most interesting feature is the possibility to promote and distribute artist’s content via mobile phones (such as ringtones and mobile wallpapers). After you register and add your content, you’ll be able to promote your mobile content at your shows, on your website and on your MySpace profile. You’ll be asked to sign a contract before getting paid.

Outreach: Talking to the Download Generation

WIPO Magazine

“I wouldn’t steal a car. I wouldn’t steal a DVD. But I might borrow a DVD from a friend. And what’s the Internet these days, but a big group of friends sharing stuff?” – Hussein*, aged 17.

Hussein was among a group of 16 – 17 year olds whose views on piracy provided delegates to the 2007 Global Congress on Combating Counterfeiting and Piracy with food for thought. A WIPO team had taken cameras into the classroom of an international school, shown the students a range of anti-piracy publicity materials, and filmed their reactions. With the subject of awareness-raising high on the Global Congress agenda, the film was intended to illustrate the importance of understanding the attitudes of a target audience when designing outreach campaigns.

Chill The Planet.com

chillchip

Chilltheplanet.com just launched an innovative digital media campaign to drive awareness of global warming issues. Through the website you can donate money that will be used to create and buy TV ad time on regional networks.

Each TV spot will promote a global warming message to raise awareness as well as send people back to the website. The founders hope to generate a loop of people coming to discuss issues and donate enough money to run the next TV spot to create a cycle of people bringing in new people. Through Chip In, the smallest of donation will help them achieve their goals. They plan to publish when and where the ads will run so contributors can catch them, record them and see their money in action. The site also offers people the opportunity to purchase a variety of products from Amazon and with each transaction they take the referral fees and plant a tree on their behalf.

25 Most Popular Blogs

Wednesday, June 13th, 2007

Blogs provide commentary or news on a particular subject such as food, politics, or local news; some function as more personal online diaries. A typical blog combines text, images, and links to other blogs, web pages, and other media related to its topic. The ability for readers to leave comments in an interactive format is an important part of many blogs. Most blogs are primarily textual, although some focus on art (artlog), photographs (photoblog), sketchblog, videos (vlog), music (MP3 blog), or audio (podcasting), and are part of a wider network of social media. The term “blog” is a portmanteau of the words web and log (Web log). “Blog” can also be used as a verb, meaning to maintain or add content to a blog.
In May 2007, blog search engine Technorati was tracking more than 71 million blogs.

There are many blog popularity-ranking services on the web, but unfortunately, they all rely on only one piece of data for their rankings. Either link popularity, RSS feeds or some sort of traffic-ranking service. To get a more accurate measurement picture all data from multiple sources need to combine. The top 25 Most Popular Blogs are ranked by a combination of RSS Subscribers from FeedBurner, Inbound Links from Yahoo Site Explore (entire site not including internal pages), Alexa Rank, and Compete and Quantcast U.S. Unique Monthly visitor data. Blogs that are only a part of a non-Blog site are not included (i.e. Google Blogs).
